Windows 8: Does its 1-month report card read pass or fail?

Windows 8: Does its 1-month report card read pass or fail?
The operating system is just a hair over one month old, so now is the perfect time to take stock of the software's public reception.

My, how time flies when you're swiping through live tiles. Microsoft's new-look Windows 8 launched exactly one month and one day ago, bringing the modern UI and mobile-style apps to the desktop masses on October 26th. So how has the system actually fared during its honeymoon period? Read on for the full synopsis of Windows 8 wins and losses.

Can you navigate Windows 8?

It can't be all bad. Or can it?

Stephen Sinofsky: the gorilla no longer in the room

Many eyebrows were raised on November 12A when Microsoft announced that Stephen Sinofskythe president of the Windows division, a driving force behind Windows 8, and a long-time leader at Microsoftwas leaving his post, effective immediately. The odd timing and abrupt announcement led to a rash of speculation. Was Sinofsky fired or did he quit? Was it planned? Are Windows 8 sales that bad?

Neither Microsoft nor Sinofsky will talk about their divorce, but many analysts believe Sinofsky's penchant for secretiveness and territorial mindset alienated external and internal partners alike, which proved troublesome in the new, cross-departmental world of Windows 8. It's hard to believe Microsoft would dump Sinofsky over two weeks of (possibly) poor OS sales. Regardless of the reason behind the split, Sinofsky's exitA was badly timed and led to a fresh wave of media focus on the negative aspects of Windows 8.

"I think it was unwise to fire the head of the unit during the launch cycle and during the critical 4th quarter," says Rob Enderle, the president and principal analyst of the Enderle Group. "It was a dangerous distraction."

Sinofsky's departure may have been a dangerous distraction, but headlines alone don't make or break an operating system. Indeed, sales figures define the bottom line, and Sinofksy has never been a household name. Nonetheless, the unceremonious exit of the Windows boss adds up to a net fail for Microsoft in the executive comings-and-goings department.

Windows Store: growing, but still unimpressive

As the Windows Store goes, so goes Windows 8. The fancy-schmancy modern UI and its glittering live tiles are all powered by new-style Windows 8 apps, and the only way to get these apps is through the Windows Store itself. Our pre-launch examination of Microsoft's digital wares revealed a worrisome dearth of apps, along with a serious paucity of blockbuster apps, to boot.

One month in, the Windows Store is looking a bit better. Wes Miller, an independent Microsoft analyst at Directions on Microsoft and the curator of the WinAppUpdate website, recently announced that the Windows Store finally cracked the 20,000 app barrier, with new apps showing up at a clip of roughly 500 per day, post-launch. Only around 13,000 of these titles are available in the United States, however, and Microsoft still has a long way to go before it nears the 700,000-plus app selection of the entrenched Android and Apple markets. Still, the Windows Store is growing nicely.

The quality level of those apps is still a concern, however. The last post on Miller's website is titled, "Windows Store: I'm holding out for a hero app," in which he bemoans the lack of exclusive Windows 8 apps and says flat-out, "There arent a ton of stellar apps. It's an observation that mirrors our own. Most of the available apps are ho-hum web wrappers, uninspired utilities or lackluster games.

10 handy Skype tips and tricks

10 handy Skype tips and tricks
Tutorial How to get better connected with Skype

10 handy Skype tips and tricksYou can add a 'Skype me' button to your blog, website or email signature

Skype lets you make free PC-to-PC calls anywhere in the world.

With a subscription, you can also make calls to external phones and receive phone calls using an online number.

The following Skype tips and tricks will help you make the most of the service.

1. Test your kit

The Skype welcome screen features a handy shortcut for testing your sound devices. Click 'Check your sound works', then click the button to test each device - speakers, microphone and video (if applicable) - in turn.

If the test fails, Skype will make some basic suggestions to remedy the problem, like making sure your headset port (typically the front mic) is selected as the default device. Follow the instructions to see if you can fix the problem.

Skype will offer to make a test call for you - you'll dial a number, hear a female voice and then attempt to record a message. This will let you check the sound quality of your microphone and ensure it's at the right volume.

Skype automatically adjusts your mic and headphone's volume to try to fix potential problems, but you can also tweak these settings yourself by selecting 'Tools | Settings | Audio settings'. You can click 'Show advanced options' to set default devices.

2. Try Bluetooth

Skype works with any microphone, speakers or headphones provided they're properly installed. This includes Bluetooth headsets as long as your computer has a Bluetooth receiver.

With your PC's Bluetooth receiver switched on and your headset in pairing mode, double-click the Bluetooth icon that appears in the notification area of the taskbar and click 'Add' under 'Devices'. Tick 'My device is set up and ready to be found', then click 'Next'.

Wait while Windows tries to locate the headset. When it appears in the list, select it and click 'Next'. Select the appropriate settings according to your headset's manual and, if necessary, enter the passkey. Click 'Next' to see the device connected and set up, then click 'Finish'.

3. Import contacts

Having a full list of contacts saved in Skype will make setting up calls a much simpler process. You can add an individual contact by choosing 'Contacts | Add a contact', then entering the relevant information manually.

If the person you're contacting is already on Skype, he or she will receive a contact request, but you can also import multiple contacts from a list or from an existing webmail or Facebook account.

Choose 'Contacts | Import contacts'. Now select the type of account you want to import from and provide your username and password to connect to that service and transfer the data.

If any of these people already have Skype accounts associated with their email addresses, they will be listed. Click 'Add those contacts' to send them a contact request. Names and phone numbers will be stored for you anyway.

4. Instant messaging

When you're signed into Skype, it can act as an instant messaging program similar to Yahoo or Windows Live Messenger. You can exchange text messages with online contacts or move to an audio call at any time.

Just select an online contact, type in your message and click 'Send' to start a conversation. In your settings you can choose whether other users can see an animated pencil while you're typing something.

You can also set Skype to receive messages from people in your contact list only, and you can opt to keep a history of all your conversations. Choose 'Tools | Options' and move to the 'IM and SMS' tab before clicking 'Show advanced options'. You can now change any of these settings to suit your preferences.

5. Start with Windows

By default, Skype is set to start when Windows launches. This is handy if you want to be available to talk at all times, but it can be an irritant if you need to get on with some important work without any interruptions. You can set Skype to only launch when you open it, by choosing 'Tools | Options | General settings' and clearing the box marked 'Start Skype when I start Windows'. Click 'Save'.

While here, you can also set the visual style of Skype. By default this is the Skype style, but you can choose Classic Windows instead. You can change the default sounds used by Skype by clicking the 'Sounds' icon and selecting the sound that you want to use.

6. Online number

To make calls to phones, you need to buy a Skype subscription or Skype credit. Click 'Skype | Account', then 'Buy more credit' or 'Get a subscription'.

Most subscriptions give you a number that lets people call you on Skype from landlines. Start by choosing 'Online number' and clicking 'Set up now'. Pick a country from the list - people calling you from that country are charged local rates, so it's perfect for keeping in touch with friends and family abroad.

There's a limited number of area codes available, so pick the one closest to you and then click one of the suggested numbers or try to pick one of your choice. Untick the box if you don't want this number to be displayed when you call phones through Skype, then click 'Activate number'.

7. Answer message

You can set up your voicemail to take messages when you aren't online. To do this choose 'Tools | Options | Calls | Show advanced options'. Now select 'Voicemail' from the left-hand pane. Tick the box marked 'Send unanswered calls to voicemail'. Click the 'Record' button and use your microphone to record your outgoing message.

If you don't record a message, a default one will be used instead, but it makes sense to record your own to give a more personal impression. You can also opt to send calls to voicemail if you reject an incoming call or if you're already on a call by ticking the relevant options. Finally, click 'Save' to store these settings.

8. Get extras

Extras let you add more functions to Skype via plugins. In the latest version of Skype the Extras Manager is disabled by default, so when you choose the Tools menu, the 'Extras' option is greyed out.

If this is the case, you need to uninstall and then reinstall Skype. Download the version of Skype provided on the Extras page. This is a slightly older version of the program. While the software is installing, click 'Options' on the Hello screen, tick 'Install Skype Extras Manager' and click 'I agree - Install'.

Once complete, sign back into Skype and choose 'Tools | Extras | Get extras'. Browse through the catalogue of extras and click the green button next to one to install it.

Some extras let you share a whiteboard or play games with people on your Skype contact list, while others provide handy recording facilities.

9. Recording calls

One such extra is MP3 Skype Recorder. This is a free program that automatically records all your Skype audio conversations and saves them in MP3 format. It can cover Skype-to-Skype calls and SkypeOut calls to a landline. It sits in the system tray monitoring Skype and starts recording automatically when you make a call.

You'll need to inform any other participants in the call that it's being recorded, especially if you plan to rely upon the recording later on. Each call is saved as a separate MP3 file and stored in the default save location.

MP3 Skype Recorder is even capable of recording multiple calls that take place at the same time while one of the calls is on hold.

10. Skype button

You can add a Skype button to your website or blog that lets visitors know if you're online. If they have Skype installed on their PC, they can call you with a single click. You can even add the button to an email signature so that the recipient of any of your mails can quickly click it to call you to discuss the contents of the email.

Get your own Skype button and enter your username. Select the button style that you want to use from those provided. Once you've provided these details, a preview of your button will be shown below them and alongside it the embed code that you can include in a web page or email. Copy and paste this code as HTML source into your website or email signature file.

Raspberry Pi now packs 512MB RAM

The educational and hobbyist gizmo du jour adds extra memory, but doesn't hike the price

The Raspberry Pi model B -- a cheap, customizable Linux computer the size of a pack of cigarettes -- now boasts 512MB of RAM, for the same price as before, according to the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

MORE RASPBERRY PI: Google's Android 4.0 being ported to $25 Raspberry Pi PC

The model B, which costs $35 plus shipping, used to have 256MB of RAM, but founder and trustee Eben Upton said in an official blog post that the foundation was consistently receiving requests for more.

"One of the most common suggestions we've heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive 'Model C' version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB," he wrote.

However, given that the foundation was unwilling to go above its $35 price point, Upton said, the decision was made to simply double the device's RAM without charging the consumer. Users with an outstanding order for a 256MB model should receive a 512MB model instead, he noted, and the foundation has released a firmware upgrade to allow access to the additional memory.

Given the Raspberry Pi Foundation's mission to promote hobbyist programming and increase educational opportunities for budding programmers, it's not necessarily a surprise to see the price remain the same despite the extra capacity. If the gadget was a commercial venture, a more-expensive "C" model -- as outlined by Upton -- would be the more likely outcome.

CompTIA Lifetime Certification Change Creates Controversy

CompTIA faces backlash from technology certification holders after informing those with supposedly lifetime A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications that they would have to retroactively pay for renewals. CompTIA has since retracted the changes for anyone who receives one of those certifications in 2010, but come 2011 the renewal process will be in place.

In December, the Computing Technology Industry Association decided lifetime A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications were going to retroactively require renewal every three years. The response from the IT community was particularly thorny, and rightfully so. Why the changes? According to Ars Technica, CompTIA was getting its accreditation process evaluated by several larger accreditation organizations, including ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute), which were helping evolve requirements.

It's not uncommon for many certifications to require renewal, but you certainly affect a lot of people when you ask them to pay to continue something they were told would last as long as they did. Lifetime is lifetime, people said. Many comments about CompTIA were negative, though the organization has taken down its original post that received a harsh response. Here's one reaction (from Phillyman's Blog):

"According to Wikipedia, over 800,000 people are A+ certified! So you just expect 800,000 people to hand over $220 every 3 years??? Before you pulled this little stunt of yours, I had planned on getting the following certifications... Network+ ($220), Linux+ ($220), Security+ ($240). Do you know how many CompTIA certifications I plan on getting now? ZERO!!!!!"

CompTIA appears to have been listening to the uproar and has changed its tune for certifications earned in 2010 or earlier, but after this year, these lifetime certifications will need to be renewed every three years. Here are the latest details from Ars Technica, which led the reporting on the controversy:

"Holders [from 2011 and beyond] who wish to maintain their certification will then have to pay an annual fee to CompTIA of $25 or $49 and will need to rack up sufficient continuing education credits to renew their certs.

The initial decision to retroactively invalidate certifications generated considerable anger among cert holders, which we described in today's story on the fiasco. An hour after our original report went live, CompTIA contacted us with news about the change.

CompTIA president Todd Thibodeaux, announcing the policy change, said, "We do not wish to disenfranchise any of the individuals who have supported our certification program. The right thing to do is honor our past commitment to those certified under our original 'certified for life' policy."

Microsoft unified communications Lync system moves closer to proverbial PBX replacement option

New Microsoft Lync features, services mean the unified communications platform will draw more customers; parity with Cisco, Avaya targeted

Microsoft is talking about its upgraded Lync unified communications platform, revealing client support for more devices, server features for better meetings and collaboration as well as integration with the peer-to-peer voice and video service Skype.

While it is clearly a good UC choice for customers with needs that align with Lync's strengths, it's not yet a platform that can jump in readily to replace traditional PBXs in environments heavily reliant on traditional desktop phones, experts say.

USE CASE: Microsoft delivers missing Lync for telemed project

Still, Lync is getting closer and its new features are bringing it into closer parity with UC leaders such as Cisco and Avaya, they say.

In touting upgrades to Lync 2013 - no release date has been set - Microsoft highlights its adoption of H.264 scalable video coding (SVC), a video codec standard that makes it relatively simple to display video on a range of devices, meaning Lync can support participants on screens ranging from smartphones to room displays, says BJ Haberkorn, director of product marketing, Microsoft Lync.

In addition, video displays by Lync clients has been upgraded to show up to five participants on screen at the same time, an improvement from having just the active talker on displayed. The view of those five is optimized depending on the number of participants and what other conference tools are being used.

Lync 2013 adds voice and video over IP for all devices, meaning that a device connected to a Wi-Fi network can participate in audio and video calls despite being disconnected from a traditional phone link. So users equipped with smartphones and tablets can conference over IP networks.

This is especially important to iPad users, he says, because the devices don't support cellular phone networks. So they can join conferences, register presence and instant message other Lync participants.

The latest Lync client supports Windows 8 with a reworked interface that embraces touchscreens, which he refers to as the Windows 8 paradigm.

Peer-to-peer voice and video service Skype is federated with the upcoming Lync server. That means a corporate user working off a Lync enterprise network could provide and receive presence information with users of Skype. They could also establish audio calls with Skype users, but not video calls. Microsoft has that ranked as the next feature it will work on after the initial release of Lync 2013, Haberkorn says.

Last summer, Microsoft added Lync to Phone, a service that lets Lync users complete calls to and receive calls from the public phone network using the Lync Online Client. Such services are available only in the U.S. and U.K. through third-party public phone network providers.

Microsoft is pushing Lync to the application developers to include UC tie-ins to the applications they write. An app could include links to information about parties listed in the user's address book and enable connecting with them directly from the application.

Microsoft has already done this with many of its productivity applications in Office where communications can be tapped via what is known as a rich content card that lists contacts' name, email, phone, instant messaging and presence information. That can include information about others sharing documents via SharePoint in the SkyDrive cloud.

For example, OneNote is better integrated within Lync meetings for taking notes, and within Outlook it is simpler to send invitations to meetings.

When Lync is upgraded, it will have clients for PC desktops including Windows 8, Macs, iOS, Windows Phone and Android. That will support tablets - used mainly within organizations - as well as smartphones.

Lync's look will be streamlined, cutting out the chrome that is now regarded as visual clutter, and making the overall look in step with what has been done to Office applications.

All this adds up to an improved Lync, but one that still isn't for everybody, says Phil Edholm, president and principal at PKE Consulting.

The reason is that not all businesses have uniform communications needs. He divides workers into three groups: knowledge, information and services, Edholm says.

The knowledge workers, such as engineers or financial analysts, are the ones that need the wide array of features UC can provide such as conferencing, collaboration, instant messaging and presence to get their jobs done. They don't rely on strict business processes as much as the other two categories of workers, but they need to communicate a lot with each other.

They also need to communicate with information workers who do rely on business processes and who need sometimes to communicate with knowledge workers. An example: a contact center worker who uses set business processes to finalize sales but who occasionally needs to talk to a subject matter expert - a knowledge worker - to supply information to a customer before a sale can be closed, Edholm says.

Service workers, such as delivery truck drivers, use information to direct their tasks, but don't need a UC infrastructure to do so.

"Lync is a toolset, and you need to decide who needs the tools," Edholm says, and sometimes that means deploying it to a select group

For instance, a Scandinavian police organization client of Edholm's had 30,000 workers only 3,000 of whom were knowledge workers. Those 3,000 needed unified communications, but most of the rest didn't, leading the organization to install Lync for some but not all.

In a company with 90% knowledge workers and 10% information workers the situation would be different. It would make sense to install UC for everybody just to avoid multiple systems and their maintenance needs despite the fact that some of the workers would use just the phone capabilities.

In a typical mixed deployment such as the police organization, the legacy telephony system could tie into Lync. Those with just desktop phones could reach those with Lync and vice versa, but the desk phone users wouldn't require new gear nor would they have to learn new ways of doing things, he says.

Lync becomes a challenge when it is deployed to people who only use its telephony features. "Lync is not structured to be a telephony-only system," he says. "You can do it but it doesn't lend itself to being easy to use and easy to install if it's just telephony."

That's because while it may perform all the necessary functions, there may be different ways of carrying them out, which requires training.

For example, multiple line appearances where a phone can ring on an individual's desk but also at the receptionist's desk would be replaced functionally by presence, a different way of doing the same thing.

"The biggest resistance comes with going from traditional telephony to Lync," Edholm says. "This is changing somewhat and will change even more with [the bring-your-own-device trend]," he says.

Edholm says he did a comparison of Lync vs. Cisco's UC for collaboration, and he found that an important factor is what the UC system has to interface with.

If the organization considering UC has a Microsoft directory system, Microsoft business applications and Microsoft databases, as well as Microsoft personal productivity tools such as Office, it makes sense to use Lync. It was built with Office, SharePoint and Active Directory interoperability in mind, he says.

If an organization doesn't use Microsoft email, calendaring and productivity apps, then adopting UC from Avaya, Cisco, Nortel or Siemens might make more sense, especially if the existing PBX is made by one of these vendors, he says. "It's not the UC system alone, it's the kind of workers you have and the other systems you use," he says.

Lync itself seems to be moving away from controlling the traditional desktop phone in favor of a UC system that includes telephony run from a desktop PC and a server in the data center or the cloud, which has service providers showing interest in the platform.

BT, for example, is offering a new Lync-based cloud service called BT One Cloud Lync that provides Lync as a service with the infrastructure based in the BT network.

Similarly, West IP Communications offers a Lync service that supports Lync edge, mediation and federation servers in West IP data centers. The upside for customers, says Jeff Wellemeyer, executive vice president of West IP, is quality of service. If these components are located on customer premises for a widely distributed Lync deployment, it makes it more difficult to ensure quality of service to all branches.

Hosted Lync isn't for all customers, though, particularly those whose media traffic is intended to stay within the LAN, minimizing WAN QoS as an issue, he says.

Wellemeyer says that customers tend to progress in their use of Lync features, perhaps starting with just instant messaging, adding presence, conferencing, collaboration and connecting to the public phone network with some softphone use.

Moving to Lync as a PBX replacement is considered a move for "someday," he says. "We're not seeing a lot of customers tearing out their PBXs and putting in a Microsoft infrastructure."

They might use Lync supplemented by PBX technology. "They think Lync's not there yet," he says.

Rumor: Microsoft's building its own Windows 8 smartphone

Called Microsoft Surface, it's due out next year, stories say

In a move that would help it compete against the iPhone, Microsoft is rumored to be making its own smartphone that will run on Windows Phone 8, which would again put the company in competition with its hardware partners.

The rumor first popped from the China Times followed closely by a similar story in Boy Genius Report.

HELP: 11 (FREE!) Microsoft tools to make life easier

The China Times story, translated into rough English, seems to say Microsoft has contracted smartphone developers and assemblers in China to build a Microsoft-branded Windows Phone 8 phone for sale sometime next year.

Boy Genius Report quotes two unnamed sources saying Microsoft plans to release the Surface smartphone in the coming months to compete against iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III and other high-end phones.

Surface is the name of Microsoft's tablet/laptop that is scheduled to launch Oct. 26 along with the Windows 8 operating system.

A second BGR source says the timing of the smartphone release is up in the air, but will likely be after this year's holiday shopping season.

If true, the rumors will mean two things: Microsoft is further risking the ire of its hardware partners by competing against them, and it is adopting the same model that Apple has used in making and selling iPads and iPhones by controlling both the hardware and software associated with the devices.

The company already caused a flap with its plans to sell Surface tablets and laptops. Acer and Lenovo responded that Microsoft ought to think twice about competing against established tablet makers and Lenovo said Surface would have a negative effect on the PC market.

Nokia, Samsung and HTC have all agreed to produce Windows Phone 8 devices in the coming months.

While licensing its software to partners who sell it on their own hardware has been Microsoft's PC model for years, things are different with tablets and phones. Whereas Microsoft dominates PCs, that is not the case with tablets and smartphones, where Apple throws its weight around with iPhones and iPads.

Apple's model is to control the software, hardware and applications, which is where Microsoft seems to be going with Surface tablet/laptops and where it would be with smartphone if the rumors are true.

Microsoft Issues Two Unscheduled Patches For IE, Adobe Flash

Microsoft has rolled out two software patches; one is designed to close vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer versions 7, 8 and 9 that leaves the popular browser susceptible to a remote code execution. The other is intended to update protection from similar exploits for Adobe Flash Player in IE 10 on Windows 8.

"Microsoft has a monthly cadence for issuing patches, and anytime they come forward with something that is not regularly scheduled, you know that it involves an important threat," said Marcus Carey, security researcher at Rapid7. "I'm recommending that administrators test the patches in a development environment before rolling them out to make sure that they don't cause unforeseen issues, but assuming that they pass that testing process, they should move on this immediately."

Individuals who have enabled Automatic Updates do not need to take additional action.

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

Microsoft on Wednesday issued a temporary "Fix-it" to mitigate the IE vulnerability, and Microsoft says that anyone who has installed the "Fix-it" can apply the permanent patch on top of the temporary patch without having to uninstall the temporary one.

"Keep in mind that a 'Fix-it' is similar to a bandage, while the permanent patch fixes the root cause of the problem," added Carey.

Although Microsoft maintains that the Internet Explorer vulnerability impacts only a "small number of users," it is also known that the exploit has been loaded into Metasploit and similar testing kits, thereby making it available to a wider range of black-hat hackers, as well as their white-hat counterparts.

The attack typically begins with a malicious website that determines which version of IE the host system is running. It then loads additional software to perform a heap spray and load an iframe. Protect.html is then loaded to trigger the vulnerability, at which point Poison Ivy is downloaded. A successful exploit leads to the ability to execute remote code.

The IE patch also resolves four privately disclosed vulnerabilities that are currently not being exploited, according to Microsoft.

Meanwhile, the company has also released a security patch for Flash Player when used in Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. “We are working closely with Adobe to help protect our customers and deliver quality protections that are aligned with Adobe’s s update process,” said Yunsun Wee, director of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, in a prepared statement.

Security researchers are advising IT administrators and channel partners to move forward with the updates as quickly as possible.

Windows 8 Update: Ballmer redefines the PC

Also: Windows 8 for games, final Office will be an upgrade to Windows RT

Just as the world is coming to grips with the post-PC era the CEO of PC software behemoth Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, seems to be trying to prolong the age by redefining the iconic business machine to include tablets.

In a Seattle Times interview with Janet I. Tu, Ballmer says PCs will sell well next year, but he acknowledges that some of what might be called tablets could also be considered PCs.

MORE: Windows Server 2012 in photos

CLEAR CHOICE TEST: 6 free email servers for small businesses

This includes Microsoft's own new hardware device Surface for Windows 8, which has all the features of a tablet but also includes a fold-down cover that becomes a keyboard. That hardware arrangement, when coupled with the version of Windows 8 for x86 processors that supports all traditional Windows applications, is a laptop PC.

Another version, called Windows RT, supports only modern applications, the name Microsoft has given to apps designed for touch. Windows RT could legitimately be considered a tablet with a keyboard.

Here's what Ballmer said to Tu:

Q: What is Microsoft's plan if Windows 8 doesn't take off?

A: You know, Windows 8 is going to do great.

Q: No doubt at all?

A: I'm not paid to have doubts. (Laughs.) I don't have any. It's a fantastic product. ...

People talk about: "How healthy is the PC market?" There's going to be close to 400 million PCs sold in the next year, which makes it a big market. And whether it's 405 [million] or 395 [million], it's a big market, and Windows 8 will propel that volume.

It also brings us into this world of much more mobile computing and more mobile form factors. I think it's going to be hard to tell what's a tablet and what is a PC.

Ballmer also flirted with setting a price for Surface, which is widely compared to Apple's iPad, but came up short. From the interview:

Q: The iPad has the largest share of the tablet market, but its soft spot, it seems to me, is the price. With the Surface, are you planning to compete with the iPad on price or on features?

A: We haven't announced pricing. I think we have a very competitive product from the features perspective. ...

I think most people would tell you that the iPad is not a superexpensive device. ... [When] people offer cheaper, they do less. They look less good, they're chintzier, they're cheaper.

If you say to somebody, would you use one of the 7-inch tablets, would somebody ever use a Kindle [Kindle Fire, $199] to do their homework? The answer is no; you never would. It's just not a good enough product. It doesn't mean you might not read a book on it. ...

If you look at the bulk of the PC market, it would run between, say, probably $300 to about $700 or $800. That's the sweet spot.

The price is the ballpark range that people pay for an iPad but without a keyboard. It's a different price bracket than that occupied by Amazon's Kindle fire, and the Surface itself has a broader set of capabilities.

Windows 8 for games

Microsoft has teamed up with the cloud-based gaming company Agawi in order to stream games to users of Windows 8 devices, the companies say.

The games would be based in Microsoft's Azure cloud and be streamed to whatever Windows 8 device the customer had -- tablet, laptop, PC.

The goal of the partnership is to make it easier for developers to create games that scale without having to worry about how that will be accomplished. That will be taken care of by the Agawi/Microsoft back end, they say.

Agawi demoed some of the games at Cloud Gaming USA this week.

Meanwhile, Microsoft also plans to open an interactive entertainment studio in London this November that will focus on using Windows 8 devices as the underlying technology.

The goal is to build a business that focuses on entertainment-as-a-service that can be sold to users of Windows 8 tablets such as the Surface devices Microsoft is making itself to best show off the new operating system.

The new studio "will allow Microsoft Studios to explore the many creative and business opportunities that developing new games and entertainment experiences on Windows 8 tablet devices and platforms will afford," says Lee Schuneman, who will head up the studio. So far the studio hasn't been named.
Free Surface tablets for Microsoft workers

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer promised at the annual company gathering that all 90,000 full-time Microsoft employees will get free Surface tablets, a Windows 8 PC and a Windows Phone 8 phone.

Employees get to use the tablets and phones for whatever they want, but the PCs are for work only, according to posts on Twitter.

Of course there is a top-of-line Surface model that has the processing power of a PC, so the promise of a tablet and a PC could be fulfilled with a single device.
Office preview at Windows 8 launch

When Windows 8 on ARM-based devices -- Windows RT -- launches Oct. 26, the version of Office applications bundled with it will just be preview versions, Microsoft says.

These tablet devices only run applications designed specifically for Windows 8 (Microsoft calls them modern apps) with the exception of specially crafted versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

But the final version of these Office apps won't be ready when Windows RT becomes generally available, Microsoft says in a blog.

"After the final edition of Office Home & Student 2013 RT is released in a customer's language, their Windows RT device will be automatically updated with the final edition for free via Windows Update (Wi-Fi connection required)" the blog says. "Customers can expect to get these updates starting in early November through January depending on their language. We'll publish the specific update schedule on October 26."
IE 10 patched for Windows 8 launch

Microsoft says it will patch a Flash vulnerability in the new Internet Explorer 10 that is designed specifically to better support the touch capabilities of Windows 8.

This is a decision that counters what Microsoft said earlier -- that it would wait until after the Windows 8 launch Oct. 26 to patch the browser.

The company must have decided the weakness represented a significant security threat that couldn't be ignored.

Traditionally IE supported flash via plug-ins, but they have been banned with IE 10 and Microsoft has instead built flash directly into the browser.

RIP Bill Moggridge, Design Father of the Laptop

Moggridge is responsible for designing the folding screen and clamshell design of the modern laptop.

Wiliam "Bill" Moggridge is the man responsible for designing the folding screen and clamshell design of the modern laptop.

The pioneering industrial designer passed away last weekend at the age of 69.

Evolution of the PC

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Moggridge invented the notion of (and coined the term) interaction design the idea that software and hardware and other products should be designed to satisfy peoples needs and desires.

He also co-founded the renowned interactive design firm IDEO, which continues to champion human-centered design. If there's a simple, easy principle that binds everything together, Moggridge says, its probably about starting with the people.

Background

In 1979, Moggridge began designing the Grid Compass for a startup firm called Grid Systems. It is widely considered to be the first real laptop.

Early portable computers were 26-pound sewing machine-sized beasts. The Grid Compass, however, was truly a breakthrough in mobile computing, with a 12-pound weight and unique fold-over display that made the device more compact. NASA and the military were the primary users of these $8,150 laptops. (With its magnesium case, the durable Grid Compass even made it into space!)

Laptops have been shrinking incredibly since the Grid Compass was released in 1982 but, in the three decades since then, the basic form hasnt changed very much from Moggridges original conception. That' s the sign of a true design genius.

Awards

Moggridge won the United Kingdoms oldest design award, the Prince Philip Designers Prize, in 2010 for the Grid Compass. He was also named a Royal Designer for Industry and won the 2009 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement.

From 2010 until his death from cancer on September 8, 2012, the British designer was the director of the Smithsonians Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The museum says Moggridge enhanced its profile as one of the worlds leading authorities on the role of design in everyday life and develop and present exhibitionsboth real and virtual.

Described as tenacious, open, and empathetic by those who knew him, Bill Moggridge will long be remembered as a trailblazing designer and the father of the modern laptop.

Microsoft gives users a patch break, and time to prep for certificate slaying

Use the light Patch Tuesday to get ahead of key invalidation update slated for October, say experts

Microsoft today said it will issue two security updates next week for its Visual Studio development platform and its System Center Configuration Manager, the company's enterprise patch and software distribution console.

The Redmond, Wash. developer outlined the two bulletins, company-speak for its security updates, in today's advance notification.

The light month -- in August, for instance, Microsoft shipped nine updates -- will give IT admins time to prepare for an October update that invalidates all certificates with keys less than 1,024 bits long.

"Customers will want to take advantage of September's quiet bulletin cycle to review their asset inventories," said Angela Gunn of the Trustworthy Computing group, in a Thursday blog post.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

Microsoft first told users that it was going to disable all digital certificate keys shorter than 1,024 bits in June, saying then that it would issue an update in August to block Windows accessing short keys. Microsoft did ship the update last month, but made it an optional download. On Oct. 9, next month's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft will add the update to the Windows Update stream, effectively pushing it to everyone.

Companies can, of course, delay the October update using patch management software, such as Windows Server Update Service (WSUS).

Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Security, echoed Microsoft's advice to use the breathing room of this month's light patch schedule to prepare for the October key-length update. "It's crunch time," he said. "It's one of those things that people may have forgotten about, and if [the October update] is approved, then things could break."

Storms posted an entry on nCircle's blog today that included links to several articles and support documents on Microsoft's site that explain the key invalidation update scheduled for next month.

Other security experts backed up Storms.

"For most IT shops, this will be a slow month, providing a great opportunity to...take another look at Security Advisory 2661254 (KB2661254), which will go into automatic-install mode in October," said Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys, in an email, referring to the key-length deprecation.

Marcus Carey, a security researcher at Rapid7, agreed. "The light patch month in September will allow organizations to prepare for this, which is great as it has the potential to break things if applications are still using outdated certificates," said Carey, also in an email. "It almost seems as if Microsoft is intentionally giving organizations a light patch month so they can focus on updating their legacy certificates."

That's certainly possible, said Storms. "They could have made an administrative decision to delay other updates to give enterprises time [to work on their certificates]," he said.

Microsoft used that same tactic in March 2007, said Storms, when it issued no security bulletins because it wanted to give customers time to apply a Daylights Saving Time update to Windows that had been prompted by widespread changes in the U.S.

Next week's slate will be smaller than in past Septembers, Storms noted: In 2011, Microsoft shipped five updates that month, while in 2010 and 2009, the company issued 10 and five, respectively.

The October update to kill certificates with shorter -- and thus more vulnerable -- keys was triggered by the discovery of Flame, the sophisticated espionage tool discovered by Kaspersky Lab. Flame infiltrated networks, scouted out the digital landscape, and used a variety of modules to pilfer information. Among its tricks was one called the "Holy Grail" by researchers: It managed to spoof Windows Update, Microsoft's update service, to infect completely-patched Windows PCs.

Microsoft reacted by killing off some of its own certificates and beefing up Windows Update's security.

During its investigation into Flame, Microsoft decided to harden the Windows certificate infrastructure. The result was its decision to block access to certificates with keys shorter than 1,024 bits.

"I'd bet that they always wanted to do this," said Storm, "but historically, Microsoft wants to support all their customers, even those with much older systems that rely on shorter keys. Because of Flame, they had a good reason to make this move."

Next week's update, while light, was still interesting to Storms, who noted that Patch Tuesday will not fix any flaws in Internet Explorer (IE), making this the first month in the last four to omit the browser.

In July, Microsoft announced it was ditching IE's every-other-month schedule, and would ship patches when they were ready.

Windows 8 Update: OS gets friendly with Linux

Microsoft works out rift with Linux community over dual boot issue; video efficiency; latest on Windows RT

s initial boot security for Windows 8 made it hard to start other operating systems on Win8 machines, but the company has worked out a way for Linux and other OSes to clear the secure boot sequence on such devices.

The secure boot, called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), requires a key for the boot firmware to hand off to the operating system, the idea being to make sure the operating system isn't corrupt.

Microsoft's initial UEFI implementation was restrictive by making it difficult for non-Windows operating systems to get their keys included in the firmware, says Tim Burke, vice president of Linux engineering for Red Hat, in a blog. But that's all been cleared up with some cooperation among interested parties, he says.

Linus Torvalds
Now the keys can be registered via Microsoft key signing and registry services for $99. That way participating vendors can get their keys accepted by the machines so their OSes will boot. "I'm certainly not a huge UEFI fan, but at the same time I see why you might want to have signed bootup etc," Linux kernel creator Linus Torvalds (pictured) is quoted as saying in the ZDNet Linux and Open Source blog. "And if it's only $99 to get a key for Fedora, I don't see what the huge deal is."
Power sipping video hardware

Windows 8-certified hardware will offload video decoding to a hardware subsystem, according to the Building Windows 8 blog.

"This allows us to significantly lower CPU usage, resulting in smoother video playback and a longer battery life, as the dedicated media hardware is much more efficient than the CPU at media decoding," Scott Manchester, group program manager for Microsoft's Media Platform and Technologies team, writes in the blog. "This improves all scenarios that require video decoding, including playback, transcoding, encoding, and capture scenarios."

A chart in the blog (below) indicates the hardware will call for a half to a third of the CPUs needed by Windows 7 for the same video tasks.

Chrome for Metro
Google's Chrome browser is getting tuned up to support Windows 8 in both desktop and Metro modes. Presumably, it won't be much challenge to get the browser to run in desktop mode since Microsoft says any app that run on Windows 7 runs on Windows 8.

But it's a little more challenging to fit it out to handle Metro and all its touch features. The company has been working on it since March, and says, "Over the next few months, we'll be smoothing out the UI on Metro and improving touch support, so please feel free to file bugs."

Samples of the browser will be available with the next Chrome Dev channel release, but the company doesn't say when that is. It also takes the opportunity to restate it's complaint that Chrome is banned from Windows RT, the ARM version of Windows 8 "Chrome won't run in WinRT, i.e. Windows 8 on ARM processors, as Microsoft is not allowing browsers other than Internet Explorer on the platform," Google says.

Qualcomm is down with Windows RT
Qaulcomm says it is making ARM chips designed for Windows RT devices -- the Windows 8 combo of operating system, limited Microsoft Office and hardware that won't run x86 applications. The chips are called Snapdragon S4 Pro.

Windows 8 is both more and less popular than Windows 7

It all depends on what numbers you look at

Last week Microsoft put out an encouraging statistic about the popularity of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system: it’s been downloaded twice as many times as Windows 7 had been at this point in its development.

Happy news for proponents of the new touch-friendly platform, given the rousing reception Windows 7 received in the wake of Vista.

BACKGROUND: Windows 8 preview popularity kicking Windows 7's butt
But a different stat crops up today from a Computerworld colleague, Greg Kaiser, who compares the number of Windows 8 machines actually accessing the Internet to the number of Windows 7 computers accessing the Internet at the same point in its development. His result: only half the number of Windows 8 users accessed the Internet vs. Windows 7 users, based on numbers from Net Applications, a Web analytics company.

That puts a different spin on things. Downloads don’t necessarily mean that the downloaded software is being used.

It’s even more complicated than that. If the download numbers are a good indication of general interest in Windows 8, those numbers are healthy. If just a quarter of those downloads were used in the past week to access the Internet it could be people don’t like it and have tossed it aside.

Or maybe the downloads are being used offline for testing, so don’t show up as accessing the Internet.

Or perhaps the performance of Windows 8 on machines designed for Windows 7 isn’t up to expectations so people waiting for better machines.

So perhaps the outlook isn’t that dismal for Windows 8.

On the flip side, what if both sets of numbers are accurate? Then there’s twice as many downloads of Windows 8 Consumer Preview out there as there were downloads of Windows 7 Beta, according to the Microsoft numbers. Yet Windows 8 is in use by just half as many machines as Windows 7 was, according to the Net Applications number. It’s hard not to interpret that as damning for Windows 8.

Something is stopping potential customers from bridging between download and extended use, and whatever it is has to be worrying Microsoft. Windows 8 takes a bold new direction for the company, embracing touchscreens, a new user interface style, and a new programming platform. The stakes are high. The numbers indicate something has gone wrong or at least not terribly right so far.

It’s not time to despair and Microsoft won’t – yet. The only meaningful numbers about Windows 8’s popularity will be how quickly and how widely it is adopted once it’s released in its final form.

This situation will boost the importance of Windows 8 Release Preview when it becomes available the first week in June because it will be one of the last chances Microsoft has to tweak the platform and boost its popularity before the final version is released.

Learning Microsoft MCTS 70-516 Exam

Microsoft certification exams are a great way to build your resume and let the world know about your level of expertise. Certification exams validate your on-the-job experience and product knowledge. While there is no substitution for on-the-job experience, preparation through study and hands-on practice can help you prepare for the exam. We recommend that you round out your exam preparation plan by using a combination of available study materials and courses. For example, you might use the Training kit and another study guide

for your “at home” preparation, and take a Microsoft Official Curriculum course for the classroom experience. Choose the combination that you think works best for you.

This article will let you understand the core developers who write or support applications that access
data written in C# or Visual Basic using Visual Studio 2012 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 and who also plan to take the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exam 70-516. Before you begin using this kit, you must have a solid foundation-level understanding of Microsoft C# or Microsoft Visual Basic and be familiar with Visual Studio 2012..

Topics to know in C# or Visual Basic using Visual Studio 2012
ADO.NET Disconnected Classes
ADO.NET Connected Classes
Introducing LINQ
LINQ to SQL
LINQ to XML
ADO.NET Entity Framework
WCF Data Services
Developing Reliable Applications
Deploying Your Application

Most of the examples in the article could run very well on a single server running both the Active Directory and Exchange Server 2010, if you do not have the time or resources to set up a fully functional lab. (Keep in mind that it is highly recommended that the Active Directory Domain Controller and the Exchange Server do not coexist on the same physical or virtual machine in the real world for a variety of reasons.)

Make use of the Testing Engines that are available, as well as the free Webcasts. Practice test material is just for that... PRACTICE. It may help you pass the test but believe me you will only last one day in a job if you don't know what you are doing, so if you use practice material, read the question and if you don't know the answer, research it and learn it, don't just memorize the answer....I will tell you right now that their answers are not always right.
